MINNEAPOLIS :
It had the feeling of a playoff game in early August.
A sold-out Target Center crowd. Two talented teams battling for every possession. Momentum swings throughout the afternoon.
The Minnesota Lynx delivered a statement performance in front of their home fans, holding off the Indiana Fever 108-100 Sunday afternoon in a game that provided valuable postseason preparation for both teams.
The Lynx came out strong, building a 36-33 lead after the opening quarter and extending their advantage with a 28-point second quarter to take a 64-53 lead into halftime.
Indiana responded after the break, matching Minnesota with 23 points in the third quarter and making a push in the fourth, but the Lynx made the plays they needed down the stretch to secure the eight-point victory.
Minnesota's victory was fueled by a balanced offensive attack led by Olivia Miles, who scored 28 points on an efficient 11-of-14 shooting performance from the field. Miles also knocked down all three of her free throw attempts while providing a major spark on both ends of the floor.
Napheesa Collier continued to impact the game in multiple ways, finishing with eight rebounds and seven assists while helping lead the Lynx through Indiana's defensive pressure. Collier grabbed seven defensive rebounds and one offensive rebound in the contest.
For Indiana, Kelsey Mitchell was nearly unstoppable offensively, leading all scorers with 37 points. Mitchell shot 14-of-21 from the field and added three rebounds and four made free throws.
Aliyah Boston contributed a strong all-around performance for the Fever, finishing with eight rebounds, including seven defensive rebounds and one offensive rebound.
Caitlin Clark helped create opportunities for Indiana throughout the game, finishing with 10 assists while playing 34 minutes.
The biggest takeaway for Minnesota was the opportunity to experience a true playoff-type atmosphere before the postseason begins.
The Target Center crowd brought energy from the opening tip, creating an environment that resembled what teams experience during the WNBA playoffs. For a roster that includes younger players still gaining postseason experience, games like Sunday's can be invaluable.
After the game, Lynx Head Coach Cheryl Reeve talked about the importance of her young players experiencing moments like this — facing a talented opponent, playing in front of a packed arena, and learning how to handle the pressure of high-level basketball before the postseason arrives.
These are the types of games that prepare teams for championship runs.
The Lynx showed composure, answered Indiana's runs, and found a way to close out a hard-fought victory against one of the league's most exciting teams.
With the playoffs approaching, Minnesota continues to build confidence while learning the lessons that come with playing meaningful games under pressure.
Sunday's 108-100 win was more than just another victory in the standings.
It was a playoff preview — and the Lynx showed they are ready for the challenge.
